Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System
The SMARTS Consortium operates four small telescopes (1.5-m [2], 1.3-m [3], 1.0-m [4] and 0.9-m [5]) on Cerro Tololo. Observations can be secured by purchasing time on the telescopes, and membership is open to individuals or institutions, including international partners. The NOIRLab community (that is, anyone eligible to apply for time on any NOIRLab telescope) may apply for time on the SMARTS telescopes through the standard NOIRLab proposal procedure [7]. NOIRLab users are assigned approximately 15% of the total time the facilities are open, averaged over all telescopes.

From the table above, select the appropriate telescope/instrument combination. Note that an instrument provided by a SMARTS Consortium member (e.g., at the 1.0m) may be dedicated mostly or entirely to a specific project, leaving little or no time for other users.

The SMARTS 0.9-meter telescope [5] (also called the 36" telescope) has a single-arm equatorial mount and was constructed in 1965 by Boller and Chivens. It is a closed-tube Cassegrain design and is currently equipped with a visible-light camera having a 2K CCD. It has found a great deal of use as a stable photometric and astrometric instrument and has proven to be a reliable and durable telescope. The Yale 1.0-meter telescope [4], originally sited in Bethany, CT, was moved to CTIO in 1972. Between 1998 and 2002 it was run by the YALO Consortium. The 1.0m has a very similar design to the 0.9m in optics and mounting. As pictured, the 1.0m sports the ANDICAM [18], which was later moved to the SMARTS 1.3-meter telescope. As of August 2020, it is operated in robotic mode with an optical imaging camera.

The SMARTS 1.3-meter telescope, formerly the southern-hemisphere 2MASS survey telescope, is a much more modern design than the other SMARTS telescopes, using a split-ring altitude-azimuth mount and an optical design optimized for work in the infrared. It fits very neatly into its dome. Here it is shown without the ANDICAM [18] optical/infrared imager. As of August 2020, it is closed, awaiting its next incarnation.

The SMARTS 1.5-meter telescope [2] (also called the 60-inch telescope) is an open-tube Cassegrain on a single-arm equatorial mount. It has been operated with both imagers and spectrographs, and the option of two secondaries giving f/13.5 and f/8. As of August 2020, it is operated with a single instrument, the high-resolution optical spectrograph CHIRON [23]. The facility is run full time, primarily with CTIO staff as observers.

Since (at least) 1999, the SMARTS 0.9-meter [5] telescope has utilized a single instrument, an optical camera with a CCD detector that is 2048 pixels on a side. The scale of the CCD is 401 milliarcseconds/pixel, thereby providing a full field of 13.69 arcminutes, or about 46% the width of the full Moon. The stability of the instrument configuration permits long-term studies that are impossible to do on most telescopes, including one of the largest astrometric programs in the world.
The facility continues to be upgraded, with recent efforts such as new motor bearings for the RA and Dec motors (2019), a new Mac observing station (2018), a new Torrent controller and software for the CCD (2016), and new floors, bathroom, and paint (2013).

The golden dewar contains the CCD detector used for science observations. Electronics and filters are housed in the surrounding black, silver, and gold boxes. The dewar is filled with liquid nitrogen, which has a temperature of 77 Kelvin, in order to keep the "background" low on the detector. The background is comprised of electrons, which are also used to detect light on the detector. So, if fewer electrons are free because of a lower detector temperature, faint signals that generate few electrons in the detector can be better measured. |

SMARTS 0.9-meter telescope web page [6]
The SMARTS 0.9-meter telescope is a Cassegrain telescope mounted on an off-axis, asymmetric mounting and used on the east side of the pier. As of August 2020 the 0.9m is used for direct imaging with a dedicated 2048x2046 CCD detector. A CCD-based autoguider, which looks at a small off-axis field, is permanently installed. The 0.9-m has been operated by the SMARTS Consortium since 2003 FEB 01.

Since (at least) 1999, the 0.9-m has been equipped with a dedicated 2048x2046 Tek2K CCD detector. Please refer to the Tek2K instrument page [27] for CCD characteristics.
Note that visitor instruments have been used at the 0.9-m for engineering, which provides a telescope amenable to many imaging applications.
There are two stacked filter wheels at the 0.9-m. The top wheel includes a color balance filter (for dome flats), neutral density filters, and open slots. The bottom filter wheel slot can hold wheels with 3x3 inch filters (up to 8 filters, typically at least BVRI) or 4x4 inch filters (up to 5 filters, typically ugriz).

For projects that require accurate timing information, here is a quick overview on how the time ends up in the image headers.
There are two different header entries relating to time, UT and UTSHUT:
UT is read from the TCS. While there is a GPS receiver that displays accurate Universal Time in the 0.9-m console room, this information is currently not communicated to the TCS automatically. Instead, the UT should be checked and manually entered into the TCS at the beginning of each night. The absolute accuracy is therefore at best ~1 sec. The TCS clock may drift slightly during the night and is therefore not reliable for precise absolute or relative timing.
UTSHUT is taken from the Torrent controller's clock, which is synchronized to the (needs updating) ...

Tek2K is a 2K optical CCD imager installed on the SMARTS 0.9-meter telescope that provides a 13.6 arcminute field of view with 0.4 arcsecond pixels. Key capabilities of the imaging system at the 0.9-m can be found at http://www.astro.gsu.edu/~thenry/SMARTS/0.9m.capabilities [30].

The observer can control and change the CCD readout format and binning. The entire chip can be read out via a single amplifier, or to reduce the readout time, two (DUAL mode) or four (QUAD mode) amplifiers can be used. The region-of-interest (ROI) can also be adjusted to use an arbitrary section of the CCD. Observers should think carefully about whether or not they need the entire field (if not, read a ROI) or the resolution (if not, bin 2x2) because substantial gains in efficiency are possible by reducing the format or increasing the bin size.
A raw quad-amplifier picture looks a little unusual. Each quadrant has a slightly different electrical offset (ie overscan level), and the four overscan segments are in the center of the picture. The real time display colors any saturated (i.e., 65535 ADUs) pixel in red.
QUAD CCD pictures have to be trimmed and overscan-subtracted in a separate pre-processing IRAF task called quadproc (in the quad package). Note that even after the pictures are trimmed and overscan subtracted, the sky levels in each quadrant will not be identical (unless the sky level is zero). This is because each of the four CCD amplifiers has a slightly different gain. After the trimming and overscan correction with quadproc, the images can be processed (bias subtraction, flatfielding) in the standard manner.
A night assistant is not provided at the SMARTS 0.9-meter telescope. An Observer's Manual, including details about the telescope, instrument, telescope control system, and data acquistion system is provided in the observing room and at http://www.astro.gsu.edu/~thenry/SMARTS/ [6].
Sky flats and dome flats can be taken. Dome flat exposure times to reach a level of about 25,000 ADU are:

When using multiple-amplifier readout, the signal from one amplifier can "leak" into the signal of another. Crosstalk is an additive effect and is proportional to the signal strength in a given amplifier. In the sample frame shown below, this effect shows up as negative (white) images of bright stars in the lower left and upper right quadrants. The white images in the upper right quadrant correspond to the (black) star images of the lower left quadrant (flip the upper right quadrant left-right and up-down).

About the SMARTS 1.5-meter Telescope
The 1.5-m telescope is mounted on an asymmetric, off-axis mount and is used on the east side of the pier. It is not possible to reverse the telescope over the pier.
CHIRON
The CHIRON [23] high-resolution spectrograph is the only instrument in use at the SMARTS 1.5-m telescope as of August 2020. In the past, the 1.5-m has also hosted the following (now retired) instruments: Bench Mounted Echelle (BME) Spectrograph, the 1.5-m RC Spectrograph, the Automated Single Channel Photometer (ASCAP), OSIRIS and CIRIM IR imagers, a Cass focus CCD (CFCCD) Imager and the CPAPIR wide-field IR Imager.
All Cassegrain instruments are mounted on an instrument rotator, and thus they may be placed at any position angle on the sky. However, rotation is performed manually and can only be done near zenith, so changing the PA usually requires at least 10 min. The angle can be read to ± 0.1 degree. Variable speed, D.C. motors have been incorporated into both the right ascension and declination drives in order to improve the efficiency of the telescope for infrared work.
Restricted View Towards the 4.0-m
The view of the 1.5-meter telescope is restricted when looking towards the SE by the dome of the 4.0-meter telescope. At the following declinations, exceeding the indicated hour angle will cause the view to be obstructed:

We are tracking refereed publications and Ph.D.s awarded that use SMARTS telescopes and data. There are several things you can do to help continue the success of SMARTS:
1. When appropriate, a reference to SMARTS in the abstracts of papers is appreciated.
2. Please include a reference to SMARTS in your acknowledgements if you used any data from the SMARTS telescopes, such as:

3. Investigators who obtained time through NOIRLab should also use the usual NOIRLab acknowledgement [515].
