Comparison of two MASS instruments, May 2002

The commissioning of the second MASS instrument belonging to ESO was done at Cerro Tololo on May 14-22, 2002, by Marc Sarazin, Victor Kornilov, Andrei Tokovinin and Matthias Schoeck.

On the picture (left to right): M. Sarazin, M. Schoeck and V. Kornilov lost between the clouds at Cerro Tololo.

The first 4 nights were lost due to bad weather. The successful comparison was finally achieved on May 20-21. The single data acquisition computer was switched between the two instruments, ESO MASS and CTIO MASS. Two more nights of comparison (May 21-22 and 22-23) are available.

The results of fixed-layer profile restoration are displayed, showing that the character of profiles is not dependent on the instrument used. Little more can be said because the turbulence was rather unstable on this night.

Here the detailed comparison between the two highest layers is displayed. The 16-km layer was stable, and we note the remarkably good agreement between consecutive points. Note that 0.2E-13 intensity corresponds to the 0.12 arcsec seeing.
