Seeks for an
Optical Engineer

 

We are looking for a professional with a University degree in Physics, Physics Engineer or equivalent to work at the Observatory as an Optical Engineer.
 
The candidate will preferably have some experience in optics and show strong interest in learning as well as motivation for professional growth in the field of optics and telescope engineering. The candidate should demonstrate that he or she has the educational background needed to do so.
 
The candidate will demonstrate aptitude for technical manipulation of delicate instrumentation and some experience in scientific laboratory work is required. For example, experience in field or laboratory work using tools like oscilloscopes, microscopes, cameras or other measuring devices, is valuable. Some computer programming experience and an aptitude for understanding and handling mechanical systems are assets. The candidate must be able to work at the telescope sites, at elevations up to 2700m. He or she should have good skills writing and speaking both English and Spanish.  English or Spanish classes can be provided if required.
 
The Optical Engineer will primarily collaborate in the maintenance of the CTIO and SOAR telescopes and their associated instruments. This includes the planning and execution  of mirror cleaning and washing programs, maintenance and testing of coating plants, take responsibility in telescope shutdowns for coating, periodic image quality checks and overall optical support to telescope and instruments operations.  He or she will also be expected to perform tasks in the CTIO Optics Lab concerning integration and testing of delicate and complex astronomical instruments. He or she will also be responsible for the maintenance of, and supervise the operation of, the 10W YAG-Laser based multi-object spectrograph Mask Cutting Machine (LMCM).
