Observing Team

DES Observers: Chris Conselice, Youngsoo Park, Ross Cawthon, Gary Bernstein
Telops: Carlos Corco, Alberto Albarez
Remote Support: —-

Observing Plan

  1. Standard bias and dome flat sequence
  2. Evening standard stars
  3. Run ObsTac queue
  4. End of the night standard stars
  5. End of night calibrations

Conditions

  1. Weather in afternoon: 4pm (local): Overcast and medium winds.
  2. Weather after dinner: 7pm (local): Overcast and strong winds. Telops noted possibility of precipitation.
  3. Weather after sunset: 10pm (local): Clouds and winds still there but observations began.
  4. Weather during night: 1am (local): Clouds have mostly cleared; winds are growing to be very strong.
  5. Weather summary: 5am (local): Night began with an almost completely overcast sky and medium winds. As the night went on the clouds mostly subsided but the winds grew to very strong levels, at times exceeding the 40mph limit and thus halting observations. Towards the end of the night winds somewhat subsided, enough for observations to resume.
  1. Seeing conditions: Median: 1.49, RMS: 0.24.

Accomplishments

  1. Afternoon: Zeros done. Dome flats (ugrizYVR) done. Flats checked.
  2. Evening: No evening standards; observations started after the “last chance” time.
  3. Survey Exposures 585198-585237; 585244-585322; 585325-585401.
  4. SN exposure SN-S2.
  5. End of night: Standards (SDSSJ0320-0000, MaxVis, SDSSJ0958-0100).

Problems tagged as Synopsis_Problem

There were a number of weather problems tonight. Due to overcast skies and strong winds, lower shutter was raised from the get-go and observations did not start until 10:05pm considering possibilities of precipitation. At 11:30pm the winds were growing even stronger and the windscreen was raised. At 2:45am the wind speeds broke the 40mph limit. Telops deemed it necessary to stop observing; exposure taking was stopped at 2:47am. As of 3:10am the winds averaged around 30-35mph; considering possibilities of again exceeding 40mph, observations continued to be paused. As of 3:45am the winds subsided to 20-25mph; observations resumed.
