ENR CTIO Blanco 4-m 2012-11-12

Date:
Monday, November 12, 2012
Telescope:
CTIO Blanco 4-m
Submitter:
R Blum
Observer Support:
Hernan Tirado
Night Assistant:
Alberto Alvarez
Also Present:
D Norman, DES team (1st half)
Problems:
DES guys see poor images on guider first part of night. Looks out of focus to me. Compare 1.1'' at 1.3m with ~2'' at DECam same time. This is not the jitter issue. DES team does a focus run. When images look good, no problem, but when there are doubts it is not easy to see what hexapod is doing. We have problems getting a normal focus sequence to run. Error with hexapod. Ann sends commands directly and moves hexapod. Then doing an exposure with acc=none, the hex LUT moves the focus to a value near 2300 um which is much closer to what we have seen in the last few nights. Images indeed much better, closer to 1''. Previously tonight we were near focus=1932 um but no complaints from hexapod (DES team asks Aaron to investigate donuts). Without DIMM running, it will be useful to keep track of the ambient temperature and z value of the hexapod as a sanity check. DES team reports ellipticities of ~ 0.3 near -28 deg Dec, 1.2 hr E. DES team has one shutter error. Cleared in a few minutes. Doing Ian Dellantonio's program at -53 deg, 0.5 hr W -> 300 sec g band. very round (0.02) and 1.2''. Could jitter be time dependent? I.e. if jitter has a component due to loading on telescope, are cables, hoses relaxing over the night? End of night in Orion. 3001. See jitter come and go from different image in this series. Can just watch on guider strip chart. Bind and release?
